The AMA (NSW) Creative Doctors Network (CDN) was created in Oct 2007 to bring together all doctors, inclusive of whatever their creative interests, for the purposes of networking, showcasing their artistic work and collaborating on new projects.
Every type of doctor is represented including: general practitioners, psychiatrists, physicians, surgeons, paediatricians, obstetricians, anaesthetists, residents, registrars, locums, administrators, academics, professors, retired doctors & medical students. The group has a rich diversity of creative pursuits involving: writing, music, painting, photography, sculpting, acting, filmmaking, singing, theatre, costume design, textile art & more. [Membership]
CDN Meetings are held every 3 months (Feb, May, Aug, Nov) at AMA House in St Leonards. Each night has a specific creative theme: Film Screenings, Art Exhibition, Readings or Performing Arts. Accompanied by finger food & wine, these fun social gatherings allow doctors to share stories about their craft, inspirations, successes and pitfalls. Meetings are open to everyone including partners, medical students, AMA Members and non-AMA Members. [News]
A huge upcoming attraction will be the Doctors Creating Art Festival 2009, a new exciting event to be held in June 2009. As an Australia-wide competition, it will showcase original work by doctors based on the theme ‘nurturing’ involving 4 competition streams: writing, photography, film and performance. [Sponsorship]
Also in development is the Creative Doctors Documentary. This promises to be a fascinating TV series documenting various creative doctors and contrasting their medical work with their creative pursuits.
A special interest writing group has also been set-up for doctor-writers interested in collaborating on screenplays, meeting monthly. The aim is to go into production with a script–to-screen film project – to be written, acted, designed, filmed & scored principally by doctors.
CDN is guided by a pro-active executive committee, who are interested in inspiring doctors to give expression to their creative souls and in turn, achieve a better work-life balance.
