26 August 2008: “AMA (NSW) is inspired to see Wallaby and Brumbies full back Julian Huxley, a cancer patient, raise money for cancer services in Western NSW by cycling from Canberra to Orange tomorrow, but regrets that there is no oncologist living in the area,” said AMA (NSW) President Dr Brian Morton.
“Cancer patients in the Greater Western Area Health Service cannot receive equitable access to treatment unless a permanent oncologist and radiation oncologist become available,” Dr Morton said.
Chairman of the Orange Base Hospital Medical Staff Council Dr Ruth Arnold said accessing regional cancer services is a major problem.
“Currently, visiting oncologists provide local treatment, which is greatly appreciated, but struggle to meet the needs of patients in the area. The new Orange Base hospital will have radiotherapy and more chemotherapy chairs available, and we welcome the expansion. However, it is essential to recruit more trained staff to run these services,” Dr Arnold said.
“We hope to attract a permanent oncologist and radiation oncologist, additional oncology nursing staff, and radiotherapists. We need permanent staff to support and expand cancer treatment services.” Dr Arnold said.
Julian is scheduled to arrive in Orange on Friday, 29 August to attend the Rugby Union Players Association’s (RUPA) Masters of Rugby Tour fundraising weekend. Donations for the Cancer Care Western NSW Initiative can be made by contacting Robyn Danzey on (02) 9230-0477.
