“Drop in smoking welcome, but don't forget healthy lifestyle”
25 June 2008: AMA (NSW) welcomes the results of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report, Australia’s Health 2008, showing that death rates from smoking, heart disease and cancer continue to fall,” said AMA (NSW) President Dr Brian Morton.

“We are pleased to see that average life expectancy has risen to 81.4 years.  The report notes that a major reason for the increase in life expectancy is that fewer Australians are smoking,” Dr Morton said.

“AMA (NSW) has campaigned tirelessly for smoking restrictions in pubs and clubs and outdoor areas and most recently to support the ‘Protecting children from tobacco’ proposals, which include banning smoking in cars with children, and removing point of sale advertising.

“Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable illness and death, so there is a need to further reduce smoking rates. As many smokers take on the habit as children, the anti-tobacco measures directed at children are timely and appropriate.

“For smokers who are trying to quit, GPs can advise on the best course of action, in relation to their health needs. GPs are essential to provide preventive health and should act as the first point of call when changing lifestyle habits,”  Dr Morton said.
