15 May 2008: AMA (NSW) is encouraging doctors in training to attend the Medical Careers Expo on Saturday 31 May at Randwick Racecourse. A joint venture by AMA (NSW) and NSW Health, the expo is FREE and provides an ideal opportunity to find out more about medicine and specialty training.
“The Expo provides an opportunity for students and DITs to explore potential career opportunities. Delegates can speak with representatives from most areas of medicine, in a casual and encouraging environment,” said Dr Andrew Zuschmann from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG).
Dr Zuschmann will be co-presenting the “Interview Techniques and CV Writing” workshop at the event.
“Two thirds of DITs have decided on which area of medicine they want to work in by the end of their PGY2 year. The Expo provides a unique opportunity for medical students and DITs to become better informed about these career options from the experts. AMA (NSW) is to be commended on providing this important event,” he said.
AMA (NSW) Student Councillor Mr Paul Bedwell is studying his fourth year of medicine, and thinks the expo will benefit people at different stages in their education.
“If students can gain an insight into the processes involved in achieving our desired career within medicine we have a head start. The expo is a critical means of gathering clues that might guide specialty choices, as well as providing motivation by meeting the specialist doctors who are currently working in our dream jobs!” Mr Bedwell said.
There are more than 35 exhibitors and a workshop program. Nearly 500 registrations have already been received, so to avoid delays, interested participants are urged to pre-register at www.medcareerexpo.com.au.
