Your GP can help with Arthritis |
During Arthritis Awareness Week (April 6-12), AMA (NSW) Vice President Dr Brian Morton has urged people with arthritis to consult their GP, as different types of arthritis require different treatments.
“GPs can distinguish what particular type of arthritis you have, and what treatment would be most appropriate. Alternative therapies are popular but your GP can discuss any supporting evidence and if such therapies can interfere with traditional medicines.
Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis and is experienced by one in ten people. Studies show that exercise and self management programs can reduce symptoms associated with this condition. “This is not just a disease of the elderly.
Most people diagnosed with arthritis are of a working age, and children with arthritis require significant medical assessment,” Dr Morton said. “It is estimated that by 2050 seven million Australians will have some form of arthritis. As your condition changes, so should your treatment and your GP is the perfect person to manage your condition.
If medication is necessary, your GP can advise you of options such as simple analgesics for osteoarthritis. “While there is no cure for arthritis, studies have shown that exercise and a healthy lifestyle can reduce symptoms such as pain and disability. Combining these habits with a continuous dialogue with your GP can ensure the best possible outcome for your present and future health,” Dr Morton said.
