AMA (NSW) supports Bega and Pambula doctors and community |

AMA (NSW) has extended sympathy to patients affected by the actions of the former Dr Graeme Reeves. AMA (NSW) President Dr Andrew Keegan said he recognized the distress caused to patients and families, particularly those families who have lost loved ones as a result of inappropriate practice.
“AMA (NSW) welcomes the referral of all matters surrounding Dr Reeves to the Special Commissioner of Inquiry into Acute Care Services. It is important for there to be a comprehensive review of all issues surrounding Dr Reeves’ practice, most particularly the failures which allowed him to take a position at Bega and Pambula Hospitals despite conditions on his practice,” Dr Keegan said.
“The community must be able to rely on the processes in the health care system which will bring inappropriate practice to the attention of authorities and ensure it is acted on, and, better still, prevented. “AMA (NSW) believes the Garling Inquiry is the appropriate venue for a review of the issues surrounding Dr Reeves and that local doctors should be allowed the opportunity to reserve comments until they are called to respond to the Garling Inquiry or any other inquiry. “The hard working doctors of Bega and Pambula have the support of the AMA. They have consistently advocated for the best services for their hospitals and communities and should be allowed to respond to issues through the appropriate processes,” Dr Keegan said.
