The Australian Medical Association (NSW) is a medico-political association of registered medical practitioners and is not involved in the recruitment of medical practitioners for positions in New South Wales. The same situation applies to the other state branches of the AMA, with the exception of AMA WA, which has a nationwide contract to recruit overseas doctors for the Federal Department of Health and Aging.
A website has been developed by the Department of Health and Ageing to assist employers through the process of employing and Overseas Trained Doctor (OTD). The site also includes information for OTDs who may be considering work in Australia.
The Australian Medical Council (AMC) has the information overseas doctors need for registration to practice medicine in Australia. It is recommended that you visit the website or write directly to the AMC, PO Box 4810, Kingston, ACT 2604, or email:amc@amc.org.au.
You could also take a look at the www.gpea.com.au website which contains information on bridging programs for medical practitioners preparing for the AMC exams. This is the education and training side of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.
The NSW Dept of Health website is very informative and should contain useful information regarding rural doctors and area of need.
The NSW Medical Board website will also help if you wish to practice in NSW. Their postal address is NSW Medical Board, PO Box 104, Gladesville NSW 1675, Australia.
