AMA (NSW) Occupational Health and Safety Education Project

(Run as part of the WorkCover Assist Program)

From early 2002, AMA (NSW) commenced the first stage of its OHS Education Project.

The project was made possible through the WorkCover Assist Grants offered by the NSW Government. The assistance program was to spread the word about the new legislation (operative from 1 September 2001) and increase compliance with and awareness of OHS issues in industries of all sizes.

AMA (NSW) developed a resource document (OHS Manual) that would be valued by medical practices trying to get their head around OHS. The second phase of the 2002 project was to take a series of free workshops to practices across NSW that would complement the OHS Manual.

In 2003, AMA (NSW) was again successful in obtaining a grant to continue their education project and extend the coverage to doctors in the public hospital system. This year whilst continuing with an abridged version of the free workshops that had taken place in 2002, posters were developed and an Occupational Health and Safety FAQ sheet for Hospital Doctors was also distributed through a series of lunch meetings at major hospitals.

To further the resource information beyond that provided by the OHS Manual, AMA (NSW) also obtained several copies of the Workplace Safety Kit and Violence in the Workplace Guide produced by WorkCover. Expertise developed by AMA (NSW) Workplace Relations staff throughout the two years of intense education has also helped practices needing individual advice and guidance on specific issues of concern.

Copies of the OHS Manuals Posters and WorkCover material are still free for all practices in NSW (not dependent on AMA membership) but a limit of one per practice applies (posters are limited to three per practice).

To obtain a copy of the AMA (NSW) OHS Manual, the above posters, WorkCover’s Safety Kit or the Violence in the Workplace Guide, please click here and include your practice name/doctor’s name and postal address.
