Professor Thursby is a General and Vascular surgeon with particular interests in rural medical practice and the management of diseases in the elderly along with distal limb revascularisation and access surgery for dialysis of renal failure patients. Professor Thursby has also undertaken additional training in the endovascular management of aortic aneurysms. He was previous head of the Division of Surgery at Lidcombe Hospital and currently is a senior member of the vascular unit at Concord Hospital and a Visiting Medical Officer at Lidcombe/Bankstown Hospital.

Professor Thursby is a past president of AMA (NSW) and plays an active role in undergraduate and postgraduate medical and paramedical training. He is also heavily committed to the development of the surgical and clinical skills component of the Graduate Medical Programme at The University of Sydney. Currently Professor Thursby is a member of the NSW Claims Committee of United Medical Protection as well as the Federal Government's Prosthesis and Devices Commiettee and the Medical Services Committee of NSW.
